Samman a talented young man from Belfast alreay gaining props from across the electronic scene after only his thrid release , all of which have been with fullbarr. Expect big thinks from this fellow!!..I caught up with him earlier this week...

You have spoken to me before about your uncle being involved in the scene, is this how u got into techno?

Yes my uncles, Maurice and Jim Chadwick, are responsible for introducing me to electronic music. They were into the "scene" in the late eighties/early nineties and frequented David Holmes' infamous "Sugar Sweet" and "Shake Yer Brain" parties. During this period they collected a lot of records. Their collection entailed UK electronica from the likes of 808 State and Orbital, Chicago House from Frankie Knuckles and Armando and Detroit techno from the Belleville Three, Robert Hood and Underground Resistance. When I was about 14/15 and got a set of turntables I started playing all this stuff. I began to look for new, underground electronic music and found out about sites like Juno that had fresh stuff coming in everyday. It escalated from there really!

What other influences have you taken on board?

Another big influence for me would have to be Shine in Belfast. When I was starting to go out, around the age of 16, I hated all the commercial clubs and used to drag my mates here as it was really the only place I knew of that played decent electronic music in Belfast. Back then I seen the likes of Derrick May, Plastikman, Michael Mayer, Derrick Carter, Chris Duckenfield, Matthew Dear, Robert Hood, Surgeon, Ben Sims and many more. Seeing these heroes locally was a treat. Not to forget their then residents: Timmy Stewart, John McIvor, Mark Bell, Phil Kieran, Simon McDermott, Nik Muzka and a few more I've forgotten.

You run a night in Belfast , tell us about it?..

Yes I co-run the "One" parties in Belfast alongside Graeme Morrison and Michael Bustard (recently added). Reason for One initiating is basically because we wanted to bring artists to Belfast that we loved. We were growing out of the bigger clubs as our music taste matured. At the time they were also just booking the same djs year in, year out which became a bit tedious. They also weren't bringing fresh talent over so we decided to just give it a go. Thankfully it was well received. We recently launched our site too: www.oneelectronica.com

On a whole what is the scene/clubs like over in Belfast?

For the size of Belfast and the hideous licensing laws/club closing times for clubs (3am), the scene is great. Theres a lot happening, the crowds are among the best and always really up for it. Smaller promoters, like ourselves, are bringing guests over on almost a weekly basis now which is great to see. Really healthy scene atm.

You have just completed your 3rd release for Fullbarr in the studio what do you use?

I try to make as much of the track from analogue gear as possible. It gives tracks that warmth in frequencies digital cannot touch. Some stuff I use: 909, 707, Juno-106, Nord lead, Jupiter 6, Moog Phatty, 303, Korg legacy and Nexus VST's for pad layering.

How do you go about producing a track? thoughts and processes?

I generally start with chord progressions or leads and build the track around them. I'd record the MIDI of the progression or lead pattern in and fire through a few synths and their banks to find a sound I like. I'd then record about 7 or 8 minutes of audio in from the hardware (with me tweaking all the parameters).

You'll have to wait and see!

Interview: Kristan J Caryl

Kristan Caryl is a freelance music journalist, staff reviewer at RA, regular contributor to DJ Mag, Mixmag, The Independent and most importantly of all, his own www.teshno.com blog. I caught up with him and gave him a taste of his own medicine.

For those who don't know you, introduce yourself…

I’m the sort of person who spends an hour thinking of a smart answer to this question, can’t, then spends an hour depressed at how thick they are: a stoner with time on his hands, basically.

Being that you’re a freelance writer, I imagine that means you can spend all your time working at home - are you a house husband? If so what’s your killer meal?

I am, or will be once I’ve gotten married in August. I literally do everything around the house. It’s fine though. I feel guilty that I basically have the best job ever and that my wife-to-be has to go out and manage a restaurant for a living. She does cook though. Fiercely well. Plus I have a touch of OCD about order and cleanliness and that, so I’m totally OK with the fact I ‘need’ to have a cupboard just filled with dust cloths and cleaning products.

To answer the second part of your question, my killer meal would probably be a steak with cyanide in, that way at least her last meal would be a good one. Weird question though, man.

At school were you good at English?

Yup! Didn’t do it past GCSE though. Didn’t want to be a journalist until about 5 years ago. Got jealous of a mate who had his name in the Uni paper next to a review. I didn’t even read music magazines at the time. Anyway, I penned a few Kerouac-style wordy wankfest which got into print, then emailed Mixmag saying “look, I did this, let me write for you”. Incredibly I got commissioned for a club review 3 months later then went round everywhere else saying “I'm a journalist, can I write for you?”

I didn’t have even a single day’s work experience, evening course, relevant degree, anything. On top of that I had only just got into electronic music... it’s quite incredible in the 21st Century there aren’t laws preventing people like me from doing things like this.

Tell me a bit more about your musical influences

This is the question I always wonder how I’d answer when I ask it. Unfortunately for you that still doesn’t mean I have a good one for you. I grew up happily listening to my parents’ Motown. Had a spell 16-19ish getting balls deep into System of a Down, Incubus, Chilis, Tool (fucking Tool!!) Deftones… that kinda shit. Then I grew up, met my now best mate who was older and into house music. It started when I fell in love with Renaissance’s Mix Collection Volume 1 by Sasha and Digweed, then got into fabric CDs and have been exploring the underground house, techno and bass scenes with childish excitement ever since. To surmise, I’d say I like deep, warm, imperfect grooves. Check teshno/teshcast for proof.

Tell me something funny…

Your mum’s so fat her blood type is ragù.

Outside music, what are your pleasures?

I’m an unapologetic food snob and am hesitant around anyone who isn’t. I need my 5 a day. We spend most of our money on food or eating out. I also love bongs. And our 5 cats (it’s fine, really). And vinyl. F1 and football also take up quite a bit of my schedule (watching, of course, not doing). I’m also now old enough (at 28?) to say, I think, that I get pleasure from tending our modest garden in the summer… grow your own kids, it not only smokes better, it’s cheaper, too!

I’d imagine, like DJing, there are many wannabe scribes wanting to make a serious living out of writing, could you offer any tips to said aspirants?

Don’t fucking email me asking for my contacts you dick. If I can blag my way in, any idiot can. I will say if you’re struggling to get replies/work, though, soz, but you must be shit. Do summat else.

Could you tell me the best artist you have interviewed and why. And... if you dare… who is the worst....

Nico Jaar was good, plenty to say and not just stuff made up on the spot, stuff he’s clearly been thinking about for years with no punches pulled. Not many people are bad, really. Most people have something to say. Just like me in this interview. Pure bull shit. I mean, if someone is shy, they’re shy; that’s how they are, that’s how you have to write it up. You might just have to work a bit harder to get stuff out of them. Or make it up – that’ll show the inconsiderate bastards.

Have you got any tips for the next producer /DJ?

Next DJ/producer I interview? Bring a book, my questions can get quite long winded and, most of the time, I give so many sample answers to make sure the question has been understood that there’s nothing left for the interviewee to reply but ‘um, yes’.

Seriously though, it’s amazing how many people seem to think you’re just out to make a cunt of them… only you can make a cunt of yourself, buddy!

Michael Jackson was definitely guilty of something, and I don’t mean illegally good records…

Artist Interview: Le Jockey

Jockey aka Cambridge producer Johnny Davies had one of the first release's on Fullbarr, I caught up with him recently to ask him a few questions.

Tell me about your early years, instruments and development into electronic music?

My early years were spent playing the violin, piano, percussion and singing. I had a fairly hectic lifestyle. I sang semi-professionally for the Jesus College Chapel Choir in Cambridge, rehearsing 5 times a week and touring around the world. On top of the choir rehearsals I had violin, piano and percussion lessons. It was a very hectic life with every spare second outside of school being completely consumed with music. Around the age of fourteen my voice broke though, and I stopped singing in the choir. This left me some free time in the week, something I had not experienced before, and it was around this time I started to get interested in writing electronic music. At school we had some Atari 520ST computers and some Roland XP-10 synths. I started to play around on these and would attempt to re-write as faithfully as possible, all the electronic dance songs I would hear in the pop charts. I went to a posh school and had led a very sheltered life and at this stage I had no real concept of underground music. However as my teenage years progressed and I rebelled a bit more, I gradually became aware of the scene and by the age of 18, following a trip to Fabric to see Tyrant I was obsessed with house music. That first night, Tyrant at Fabric, was by far the most important night of my life.

How has your production evolved , what do you use ?

Equipment wise, I just have my laptop and a midi controller. Everything else is software. So my kit hasn't really evolved much over the last five years, except for buying faster laptops. I am finding that I work faster with time as I know my software better, and I always try to figure out new interesting things to do with the software I have. For me, the most important piece of kit is actually the monitor speakers and the room acoustics. I have about 5 different pairs of speakers, ranging from expensive studio monitors to the cheapest of hifi speakers, with everything else in between. These are all controlled by a switch box, allowing me to hear what my mix-down will sound like on a range of different speakers. And the room acoustical treatment is essential too. Bass traps, and absorption behind the speakers, deflection behind the listening position.

With other known successful artists from the area, has living in Cambridge inspired you in any way?

I think Cambridge allows you the space to breathe. Its a very soft gentle existence here. No gangs, violence etc. Just allows me to be myself and walk around the city with my head firmly up in the clouds. Also the city is beautiful. Really beautiful. Some of the colleges in the university have been around for about 800 years. The architecture is stunning. At the moment I still have my day job, which is working on the punts in Cambridge. From here I get to spend my days floating past the most beautiful of the buildings as I push tourists up and down the river. The whole mix of serenity, beauty and peace is the ideal environment to allow creativity.

As a young upcoming artist what are your thoughts on the music industry as it is now?

No thoughts. I used to procrastinate loads about the download thing, the piracy issue and how I was going to 'make it' in this industry. Nowadays I don't give it any thought. How do I even define 'making it'? All I concentrate on is writing music and trying to craft my skill as best as I can. I don't give the rest any thought. I run a party called The Fuss with a couple of mates locally, which gives me an outlet to play and perform my music, and I get asked to play other gigs across the UK but I don't actively self promote or worry about where the next gig is coming from. I have found for me that music is a lot more fun if I don't worry about these things and just enjoy the process of writing music and trying to be the best I can be.

Tell me some inspirations.

The best and the worst experiences in life. Love and loss, highs and comedowns, birth and death. I find inspiration in the extremes of emotions we experience.

Tell me something funny?

I told a group of tourists the other day that the Wren Library in Cambridge was the last building in the country to be built before Isaac Newton discovered gravity, and as such was the last building to be built from the top down.

What has been your biggest personal success so far with music?

Hmm, difficult to say really. There is youtube footage of the Belleville three (Atkins, May, Saunderson) playing a remix of an Onionz track I did with Jim Masters (which was basically a complete new track) to around 50,000 people at Awakenings festival, Amsterdam. That was quite a buzz seeing that. I think my biggest personal success so far though would have to be writing a piece I called Hand Shoe. It was such a personal piece of music for me to write, and I think it is the piece which comes closest to capturing the emotions I was trying to portray.

You have a track on Fullbarr as part of cool VA EP as well another EP planned and we spoke a bout an album before December, what else have you got coming up?

I am finally biting the bullet and signing with a manager/booking agent, so I am hoping for some more gigs this year. I have been playing quite regularly at The Egg in London, and at my own party as well. Release wise I have a few things in the pipeline, including an electronica EP on Endemic Digital to be released over the next few months. The album for Fullbarr will be my main focus though.

Samaan - Detroit Memories

If you’re on the lookout for that track that’ll take you away, like many claim but fail to do, 'Detroit Memories' could be the one. Not just as a reminisce to Motor City glory days, but the way dream-weaving synths prioritise the welfare of your precious headspace...and then comes fierce acid techno telling you to snap out of it. Pot-boiling acid demanding that you man up and jump down from the clouds, it’s a bit cruel from Samaan Vahid really, but you can’t argue with the Belfast up and comer’s believing of angels and demons becoming bedfellows. Excellent transitions from smooth into rough, with Mark Broom’s remix a non-believer in niceties once his throb and thrust has taken over – all of his recollections of The D, sounding more like suppressions trying to take away the pain, are taking the jugular for ransom and never letting up.

About Samaan’s softer side...here it is setting up shop on 'Pixel Planet', not an 8-bit block-buster of moves but post-epiphany acid ambience with old skool hi hats rat-a-tatting and chords hitting the snooze button. A little meaner on the inside but otherwise just as composed in its rubbing of temples is 'Ya Feel Me'. Asking you to jack responsibly upon consumption, it’s the door-hammering bassline that suggests there’s a bad egg at the track’s root, Samaan getting anxious like a firebug on Guy Fawkes Night. An all-round A+ acid exhibition, and you’re glad Samaan is telling both sides of the story, going greedy for heady heights and rumbling rock bottoms in his recollections.

Luke Solomon - Ultrasound

A headache when it comes to classification, 'Ultrasound' is central to four tracks of pleasing pickles. A gentle giant puts farty breakbeat bass plus head-hunting vocal and spooked choristers on one side of a dancefloor scrimmage line, against Pong-playing blips, aquatic percussion and gentle piano nudges on the other. Both sides are likely to swap positions at any time. Much lighter and less chaotic than some of its inventory tells you, an assortment of technological spins, acid rolls, bongo beats, Balearic contact and more are the tip of the mishmash, the Music for Freaks fundamentalist throwing in synth selections whenever they’re on offer in a half-improvised, conversation-interrupting spread around as well. Solomon has his house in order, with a lot of love to give.

A similar cupboard full of contradictions is opened for the '1.2 Horn Version', a jazz-techno smorgasbord beamed up with trumpets trying to fight gravitational pull; 8-bit pulses are called upon, and Solomon again arranges synths when the time is right. Deepness giving off druggy symptoms, it’s off-the wall, punch-packing in places, playful in others.

Swiss big cheese Kalabrese lounges a little more, an outing from Sacha Winkler that you imagine once upon a time had a career peddling sleazy red light jams, but now has a happier outlook on life, the backing singers breathing more easily thanks to the sensible kitsch taking control. Or by another categoriser’s definition, deep electro house. LoSoul is another happy chappy with a grubby lil’ wormer funking though the night, beginning as a tastily taut garage beat – not as dedicated a hoarder as Solomon, but he likes a spot of bric-a-brac nonetheless. Peter Kremeier applies a stinger of a breakdown made to make you jump from your seat, though any chair occupation throughout will be limited.

Chicago-based producer Area will release his first album in March on Wave Music.

Area DJs on Chicago's WNUR under the name m50, and started putting out records in 2004. His first full-length combines previously unreleased material with selections from his past EPs. The tracklist was chosen by two artists that have been instrumental to his career so far: Francois K, who put out the Absence EP on Wave Music in 2009, and Brendon Moeller, who released Tangled In a year later on Steadfast and made a record with Area under the name Lightness. Kevorkian also "sequenced" the album.

He will feature an edit of his debut release on Fullbarr "Cellicos"

Artist Interview: Hans Berg

The first of many little conversations with friends and artists connected with our little project.

Hans Berg is an artist from Sweden who has been based out of Berlin for the last several years. He approached me with some ideas and tracks early last year and after some hazy nights in Berlin I realised he would become a main artist on the label.

His debut 12" will drop before the summer and will have an album out hopefully by the end of 2012.....

For people who don't know , tell us who Hans Berg is?

I'm a swedish guy who makes music, mostly house, but i also do music for the swedish video artist Nathalie Djurbergs videos and installations. It's really nice to be able to do two quite separate things, because i get to do all kinds of musical styles, and mix them up however i want. There are not boundries in the art music i do, on the other hand it's nice to work within certain boundries as you do with dance music. I do live performances too, which i really like, but i don't DJ because it doesn't really interest me, although every now and then i change my mind for a few seconds when i hear someone really good playing.

What make you get into electronic music , what are your influences?

I've loved electronic music ever since i was like 12, as a kid i listened a lot to the radio and in sweden we had a long running show with electronic music that i kind of grew up on. I like a lot of old school things, i'd say i come from a (acid) house, detroity kind of background, that's my favourite sound. I like things a bit grittier, although for some reason it often turns out quite nice and pleasant when i do music. I think i'm too soft.

And at what age did you think you wanted this as a Career?

Actually quite late, i released a few tracks back around 2001, and then i foolishly thought i wanted to be a graphic designer instead, so i started studying that in Berlin. But there i met Nathalie Djurberg, we started collaborate and i was making more and more music, and taking it more seriously, and soon i didn't have time for school so i dropped out and started focusing full time on my music, which i've been doing for a couple of years now.

tell us about your involvement with your partner Nathalie Djurberg's art installations.

We always work together, she does video art and installations with sculptures, and i do the music. The films are stop motion animations, with clay puppets and such, and there is usually no other sound apart from the music, so it both work as narrative film music and you could say that it sometimes replacy dialogue, bringing the story forward. Or i choose to go against the story with the music to create a certain effect.

when we were in Berlin you showed me the 5 track project could your explain this and how has it developed.

Yes this was for a large installation, with over 80 sculpures, resembling gigant birds, and five films. Each film had its own one-channel soundtrack, but they were all playing in sync, and the five soundtracks together formed a "master" soundtrack, making it into a 5 channel surround score. This was very complex to make, since each film had it's own narration and special score, but at the same time they had to work together as a whole, and it also had to work with the sculptures. In the installation, when you walked up to see one film, you would hear that soundtrack louder than the others. And when you would stand in the middle of the room, amongst the sculptures, you would get the best surround effect. The music is electronica with strings and horns and synths and sound fx and some more things. We will exhibit this again in the beginning of may at the New Museum in New York, and in autumn in San Fransisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

How do you go about producing tracks?

It usually starts with fiddling around with different sounds, when i find a sound i like i play around with it, making some kind of melody, or if it's a drum sound/kit i start working on a beat, and then i go from there, building the track. With the art music it's a bit different, then i start with an idea that would fit the film, and start looking for the sounds and melodies for my idea.

you recently moved from Berlin back home, how long where you there , and how do you find living i such a vibrate city?

I was nine years in Berlin, so it really has influenced me in many ways, i've noticed that i really favour a certain Berlin sound if you can call it that, the dirty house music bouncing off concrete walls. I realize i've gotten very spoiled with clubs, going to all the best ones every week, almost everything is allowed and they never close, that's definitely something i miss. But electronic music is also such a hard business there, EVERYONE is a DJ or producer, and everyone fights for the few spots there are, that can get a bit annoying. But anyhow i need a change of scenery, and after a few months here in Sweden I'm planning to move to New York, wish me luck!

With this first release out in most record stores either right now or shortly , we will soon be welcoming after some delay - the stock for fbv002,

Hamburg’s Jan Tenner makes his 2nd EP appearance following up the hugely successful ‘F.N.K EP’ from earlier this year with 2 original tracks of delightfully deep and tech inspired house. ‘Whatever’ has a wonderful techno inspired vibe to it, with it’s filtered stabs and gated riffs while ‘Piece of Cake’ journeys into deeper melodic territory with a track that draws on keys, horns and warm bass to create rich musical groove.

The first of the remixes comes from Swedish born, Berlin based producer ‬Hans Berg who gets to work on ‘Whatever’. Berg’s mix stays true to the original, keeping much of the feel and flow of Tenner’s production but adding his own style to the mix, bringing the stabs to the fore and creating a piece that has a real hypnotic vibe to it.

And finally we have a remix of ‘Piece of Cake’ from 20 year old Munich producer Henry Gilles. This is his third remix for fullbarr and on the strength of this you can see why he has become such a firm favourite of the label. Gilles takes the already deep and mesmerizing original and leads it even further underground with some superb production and edits creating a groove that has you hooked from the start.

Matthias Vogt - Rudiments EP

Matthias Vogt needs little introduction as an artist. Co-founder of Motorcitysoul he has recorded for the likes of Freerange, Simple and Tsuba whilst his solo productions have graced such labels as Saw and Urban Torque. He is a resident at Sven Vath’s Cocoon club in Frankfurt, travel the world as a DJ and when away from the hustle of electronic music he is an accomplished Jazz musician.

Vogt’s latest musical offering opens with title track ‘Ghost Train’, a deep and deliciously dubby slice of subtle and mesmerizing house music. Vogt’s musical and production abilities are very much on show here, with understated melodies and sublime audio layers creating a simply stunning piece music that is certain to work as well off the dancefloor as on.

Next up we have ‘Rudiments’, a classic slice of deep house with bubbling bass, jazz inspired percussion and intertwining keys and synths. This is quality, laid back house of a very high caliber as you would expect from such a producer.

The package is tied up by James Teej’s ‘Periodic Table rmx’ of ‘Rudiments’, which strips the original and takes the parts on a journey into dark electro tech inspired house. Teej’s mix has a perfect balance of deep edginess and musicality and provides an excellent accompaniment to the two originals.

Great start to Samaan's production career, this great EP out now in all good online stores, super feedback and even some nice reviews so far, -

Having landed at Wroclaw Airport, and straight to the promoters house for a round of 5 shots of 50ml vodka... I quickly learnt this wasnt going to be a chilled affair!

First up was the Fullbarr party at Klub Puzzle alongside Huxley and new addition Jonny Cade, pretty great and hazey stuff indeed all night long! saturady night was just off the hook, Das Local a very cool venue indeed.

Thanks to all the Wroclaw crew, Luz Radio, Das Local and clubbers for some awesome times and memories, will be back in June.....;)

Welcoming Samaan to the stable

Ok this month we welcome to the plate another debut artist with two EPs already confirmed, the first out in April...

SAMAAN is very much a second generation house and techno head, having spent his childhood around two acid house uncles who frequented Belfast’s infamous Sugar Sweet in the late Eighties and David Holmes’ night’s in the nineties. It was through the discovery of said uncles dust covered vinyl collection that Samaan found his passion for electronic music and by the age of 19 he was co-promoting Belfast’s ‘One’ night and playing alongside the likes of Michael Mayer, Sascha Dive and The Wignomy Brothers to name but a few.

Wow I must say Amsterdam is quite a city indeed! Firstly heading to the really cool studios of XT3 Techno Radio on the outskirts of the city where I played a 2 hour set live on air, very enjoyable indeed! Thanks to Maurits & James!

My debut in Amsterdam came at 10.30 in the Morning alongside Moscow's Archie Hamilton, in one of the coolest venues Ive been too,(A disused laughing gas factory) this illegal rave was already rammed to capacity, Thijs & TJ really had thing's well prepped respect to those guys indeed!! Looking forward to getting back.

Dropping Green Velvet - Flash in front of 400 mad dutch bastards in a disused laugh gas factory in Amsterdam at 10.30 am was definitely a result!

"In a little over a dozen releases, Fullbarr Digital has admirably jostled its way to the front of the queue in the race to prove that not every digital label is simply putting out filler in a bid to plaster the electronic music scene with sub-standard tuneage. Having begun 2011 with the brilliant Emmanuelle’s Party Bucket EP from Death On The Balcony and Ste Roberts, Fullbarr looks east with an EP from Serbian pairing Gliesers. Milos Pavlovic and Nenad Petrovic have been putting in the hard yards back home, and offer a pair of stargazing tracks that form the basis of another solid release.

The title track is a slow-burning, hypnotic cut of deep techno that builds momentum with its gently expanding chords, firstly washing over the listener, then suddenly breaking out into shimmering melodies. Accompanying it, Riverside follows a similar path, with deep, reverb-drenched stabs, that slowly emerge from the mid-range to cascade over a military drum, a deft piano making an appearance to lend a wistful edge. There are two good remixes of Kupier Belt included: Echologist adds subtle percs and leans into heavier techno territory, while Youandewan’s deconstructs the 4/4 into a a swirl of reverb, chords and off-centre beats."

"For our latest single excursion, we have teamed up with Death on the Balcony duo Mark Caramelli and Paul Hargreaves who join forces with the superb Ste Roberts for an EP of quality deep house, backed with some top notch remixes. Death on the Balcony and their own Magicbag label have been one of 2010’s real success stories, drawing huge international support, whilst their own nights in Leeds and London have become a roaring success. Ste Roberts is one of the key figures behind the superb Hypercolour and Glass Table labels and is a much respected DJ and label A&R.

The ‘Emmanuelle’s Party EP’ is kicks off with the original version of ‘Emmanuelle’s Party Bucket’, a track named after the DOTB club night which bears the same moniker. The story goes that the name originally arose after a night the studio sampling a famous adult movie over a bucket of fried chicken! The track itself is a superb slice of deep and understated house, with a warm rolling bassline, sampled vocal edits and subtle layers of percussion, great stuff.

Next up comes the chunky and hypnotic ‘Parental Guidance’ which takes things into slightly techier territory whilst retaining the same depth and character of production. This is heads down, late night tackle that is bound to find favour at all good underground house clubs.

The rest of the EP provides 3 excellent remixes of ‘Emmanuelle’s Party Bucket’, the first from Archie Hamilton, who turns things acidic, the second from Henry Gilles, who provides some classic melodic house and finally Robert Cashin who delivers a sterling slice of underground house for the closing opus.

Near the Harbour of Hamburg, Pedestrians look up to the window of Jan Tenner's Appartment building as the bassdrum rips through the walls.
Jan Tenner is at work. He has put down the headphones and like us all turns up the volume...

Hamburg based newcomer Jan Tenner dishes upsome lusciously deep chunky cuboid house for Fullbarr's latest outing. Consciousness presents us with a tight rhythmic percussive arrangement which is carried along on a bed of warm piano chords, and marrys in with some warped spoken word, bringing some strong overall sophisticated chicago flavours. great for warming up.

So strong ups the momentum a touch with a surging electronic synth pattern making up the leading hook. cushioned by a distant sad string pad and a soulful, this track captures an immense amount of emotion, and if used correctly, could mark a really special moment in a set.

Funk plunges even deeper, starting off with a nice low-end buzz which slowely evolve into some solemn organ chords, backed by a warped "get the fuck". As the track progresses, the leading hook is eventually overpowered by a high-pitched, yet soft drone of a siren, which brings the track to its climax. The drop is met by a substantially wide bass melody which provides that extra needed groove. Mystical.

Brendon Moeller's take on Funk is far more focussed on the dancefloor.. He provides a hypnotic shuffly swing-based percussion that rolls along nicely over the top of deep dubby chords. During the break, Moeller inserts plenty of signature glitchiness. perfect wonky early morning basement vibes.

Turkey isn’t often associated with underground music, I can only think of a couple of established artists on the scene right now indulging us with there productions worldwide.

However one very promising artist is arising from the capital Istanbul, in the shape of Henry Gilles, I first noticed the young man when he brought out his Crunchy fingers EP on Logo Tunisia Records. Since then we have him on board and he has produced 2 cracking remix efforts due out by the end of the year.

Fellow Leeds Resi's Paul & Mark aka Death On The Balcony first appeared on Fullbarr via their excellent Stay Remix way back this year.

.....Comes yet another label debut, this time for Dutch deep house new comer Helt.

Set Beat starts off with a simple yet effective groove. Some nice spread out synth stabs give a deep and deadly aura. Helt holds back and releases the clap really late on, getting the dance floor all pent up. Some liquid metal effects and a dark, eerie male vocal aptly season the track out with some subtle late-night flavour's

Mark Brooms interpretation takes things straight to the centre of the dance floor by creating a tight loopy beat to build on, steadily layering with warm organic rhythms and lazy hazy drones. A peaktime tool with plenty of backbone. Hypnotic.

Leeds A-list Techno party System residents Annie Errez and Bobby O'Donnell take the original record down a much darker path with a stripped back, trippy, late night groove. Electro-tinged blips float over gunky, lo-fi screw beats while warbling, palid vocals hover in the background. Wouldn't sound out of place in one of Magda's sets.

After Russo’s Wicked Debut EP Manitoba He takes us down a gear with his interpretation, adding depth with a crunchy low groove, swirling synths and moody melodies.

Archie Hamilton crafts a clinical deep house spin of the original,with some delicious acid undertones. Creating some ripples in London at the minute, he is definately one to watch for the future.

‘Manitoba EP’ is the debut release from Sam Russo, a 23 year old emerging techno talent from Southend-on-Sea. A Bit about Mr Brewster

Originally hailing from Grimsby in the North of England, Bill Brewster's first passions were football and music. Already amassing a substantial record collection whilst he was writing for football magazine When Saturday Comes, he was then approached to write for Mixmag, eventually becoming the one of the editors at their New York branch. It was there that he met writing partner Frank Broughton.

Bill runs Low Life, the legendary underground warehouse party now in its 15th year. Bill and Frank have also written three books, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, How To DJ (Properly) (or How To DJ (Right) if you're a funny foreigner) and a third one we don't like to talk about. He DJs all over the UK and Europe, with occasional forays into the USA and Lapland

....With a broad background of electronic dance music from the early 90s till today Nils is one of this generation's young producers who grew up with the four to the floor beat.
Calling himself a music lover in the first place, the passion for the deep groove is reflected both in his dj-sets and productions.

While spinning records for about a decade his attempts on creating own tracks are quite new but none the less deliberated. His music is full of low-slung swinging grooves taking on a modern approach to real house music.

Fullbarr's man with the words Bruno Schmidt caught up with the excellent :Russo, Watch for his first release on fullbarr out soon the superb double tracked house ep backed up with 5 on the money remixes.

What was the music scene in southend like when you were growing up? What sorta stuff did you and your mates listen to before you caught the techno bug? Or were you listening to plastikman records age 8? 
- The music scene in Southend when I grew up was mainly hardhouse and trance and prior to that it was garage. I remember listening to a sun city tape pack that my older brother had in his collection this lead me onto purchasing some technics at the age of 12 and I started my vinyl collection of U.S House and Garage a lot of my school friends were into hip-hop and drum and bass. I was fortunate to have a great record shop not far from my house and knew the manager Norman H (StrippedMuzikclub) he was very influential to my track selections back then.  

How long have you been making tunes? You been busy in the studio recently?
- Not that long around 3 years or so, I regret not starting it at a younger age. I have been very busy working on a few different remixes for Fullbarr and Stripped Recordings and have just finished a downtempo E.P due for release on Stripped in August. I have also just started a collaboration with Huxley who is receiving big support from the heavyweights.

What do you produce on?
I use Logic 8 as my host then various Logic plugins and my favourite Rob Papen Albino 3
I also use Ableton live for various tasks when producing, I find sampling in Ableton is easier than logic.
I bought some Adam A7 monitors with the last bit of my student loan which has been my biggest investement the clarity is amazing.

When your in the studio making a track, have you got a set formula you usually work with, or an idea of a sound you wanna get? Or do you just let it flow...
I usually have some sort of idea but the ideas tend to change throughout the entire process. 

I was a bit of a garage head when i was younger! My parents also used to play alot of soul/motown/disco and early R&B when they partied. I like to think those early influences come through slightly when I play or produce. Does the music you make/play now reflect music you grew up listening to? 
I listened to a lot of garage and U.S house when I was younger my dad used to play soulful house from Octave One to Mike Dunn and a lot of reggae, I do think that it is evident from the style of my music although I like to think I have a new sound

Which artists/labels are really doing it for you right now? Whats at the front of your bag so to speak? Anyone you thinks gonna blow up in the next year or so? Where are we most likely to catch you spinning?
My favorite label is Kevin Griffiths Tsuba. Every release is exceptional, check out the new Huxley release ‘Get Your Own’ out now on Vinyl and Digital. Im really looking forward to the coming years and I think Huxley is the one to watch.
You can catch me playing at Circo Loco, Cocoon and Resident parties @ Junk (South Coast) Junk has the best sound system I have ever heard and has some of the best line ups, this club is certainly making a good name for itself in the house scene. I just secured a residency with House heavyweight brand Muak @ The Egg (London). You should also check out the What If? warehouse parties in London, these parties are amazing and are very exclusive with only 3 per year

What do you like to do when your not making music and Djing?\
When im not making music or DJing, I think about making music and DJing. Im an avid music collector both Vinyl and Digital formats so don’t have time for much else, I am studying a masters degree in Audio Engineering so I suppose that is my other hobby, world cup not for me im afraid.

Whats the funnest party you’ve played at/partied at recently?
The Circo Loco parties at Junk are the best I have played for the atmosphere is amazing and the people are sexy but then the warehouse parties share the same vibe, I like hedonistic parties, the relaxed atmosphere suits me.    

What do you hope to achieve by the end of 2010?
I would like to have many more solo releases and keep collaborating with artists, I have a lot in the pipeline with studio dates arranged with Saytek, Huxley and Eleven8 (Dubstep), I have some really exciting parties lined up with Junk night club (Southampton) so keep you eyes peeled.

FBD009 - Le Jockey - Perfect Cadence

Le Jockey opens up this EP with aptly titled “Perfect Cadence”. Jockey, like with most of his releases moves away from convention and shows a strong sense of his own style, teaming the finer aspects minimal with groovy swing-house rhythms. The track gains momentum with layers upon layers of clever little glitches and one-shots, slowly and steadily building up a nice rhythmic groove. A trippy synth provides the main hook, which eventually strips down to the main break, leaving a epic, piercing single-note which Jockey has engineered to sound absolutely huge. Dark, but at the same time uplifting, this is proper hands-in-the-air afterparty territory.

Louche resident Josh Tweek provides the re-spin, treading more organic ground, but subtly works in all the warped glitchy goodness of the original. The more dancefloor friendly of the three, this builds its hook around a warm hypnotic melody and a nice tight percussion arrangement. A good tool for warming up the party.

Mein Frankfurter (Est Ein Chorizo Party) commences with a cadence (that word again) of resonating guitar chords coupled with the occasional deep bassy stab, which sets the scene accordingly. Again, big sounds from Jockey, low humming descending basslines and deep echoed vocals. -What are you up to right now?
Right now just trying to make music, run my weekly nights here in toronto and enjoy the summer!

- Producton/DJ wise whats gong down in your world at the moment.
Right now i'm working on some new music, both originals and remixes, running the label with jonny, we're about to relaunch our site and some amazing new releases!

-Tell me more about Saxaphone Records
Saxaphone was a store we opening in my hometown of london ontario in 1999 - 2001. we ran it for a few years but decided to shut the doors as we were seeing a drastic decline in vinyl sales.

- Whats the Toronto/Canadian scene like for underground musc at the moment?
The scene in toronto is really hot. lots and lots of events happening every wknd. not to mention all the producers who are emerging fro the city making noise internationally

- The best piece of advise you can give a budding DJ/Promoter?
Build your network and your sound. having your own unique brand of whatever genre you're into will set you apart from the rest!

- what tunage is hot in your box rght now?
loving that new art department stuff courtesy of my crew. also all the mfr stuff and james teej .

DJing has taken Carlo all over the UK and Europe; he has played in Italy, Ireland and Ibiza, and has had regular sets in Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield and Manchester. Polaroid, Area 51, Sankeys, and Back to Basics are a small selection of clubs played.

Having entered the production side over 5 years ago, Carlo has had several releases. Alongside 'Euan Mitchell, '‘Together’, a deep house number released through white label in 2006 was hammered by the likes of Mark Farina, Lil Mark and Inland Knights. ‘Be There’ followed in 2007 on New York label Blunted Funk, this smooth, soulful, jacking house rocker would be right at home in a Mazi or Jay Tripwire set. Also in 2007 ‘Trust’ and ‘Talkin’ Dirty’ was then released as a 2 track EP released on the Italian label, Tokyo Red. In 2009 came the release of Carlo's version of ‘Airplay’ on Papstec, this was originally produced by The Nox and has had good reviews from the likes of Fergie. Now into 2010 Carlo’s latest release, ‘Capsized In Capri’ EP has been causing abit of a stir amongst some of the biggest deep/tech house heads. This is another great EP to come out of up and coming label from Poland, ‘Look Ahead Records’.

In 2007 Carlo came runner up in the IDJ Magazine ‘Raw Talent’ competition. Having entered the competition again in December 2008, Carlo won with his ‘Talk is Cheap’ mix. The judges gave rave reviews of the mix.

Having just received a cracking remix from this lad on the forthcoming Russo EP, Fullbarr thought it best to let you have a look into his antics...

Saytek aka Joseph Keevill is a self confessed "Geek with a Passion" who was jamming with synths, drum machines and a Tandy mixer from the tender age of 8. Whilst other kids were collecting Star Wars toys, Saytek was dragging his mum around car boot sales looking for obsolete synths or creating sound warping algorithms on his commodore 64.
Saytek has been a major player in the scene for almost 10 but has just risen to underground hero status in recent years, releasing successful deep tech house and techno records since 2001 all of which have been met with critical acclaim, as well as being championed by the world’s most respected DJs. Fast forward 2010, Saytek is a live artist, an innovator and pioneer who brings real meaning to the term "Live" in electronic music arena.

Using Classic roland hardware, cutting edge 21st century computer technology and a myriad of noise mangling gadgets, Saytek creates & improvises on the fly. Not only is all the music his own but it is truly performed live in response to the crowd. His shows are so awe inspiring that he has been sited by both press and underground music fans as one of the best live acts to emerge in recent times. His reputation as a performer alone has earned him the place as headliner at some of Europe’s most highly regarded parties, an accolade shared only by the cream of underground house and techno talent.

His technical flare is coupled with fierce music integrity which has remained in tact since he was introduced and fell in love with Detroit techno and acid house at the age of 13. As such, both his own productions and his experimental DJ sets are suffused with the very stuff of life: experience; depth and stuffed with music’s true elixer: Soul...

From the beginning Helt's own musical output has revolved around more than just functional club music, regardless of whether it’s on the turntables or in the studio. Combining subtle arrangements that ride the deep vibes that lie between House and Techno, yet never forgetting the drive for the dance floor - that is what Helt's music is all about. Working together with other artists is also very important to Helt. In the summer of 2009

Helt released his first track with a collaboration called Amsterdam Sound Exchange. The debut Vinyl EP from Fullbarr is now out in the shops, from AREA, Includes some superb mixes from Legend Brendon Moeller & Davor.

Cellicos was originally conceived on a rainy day travelling southbound via rail, the melody interweaving with the rhythms of the train, different frequencies masked and accentuated by the wash of noise on the tracks, the interaction of interminable flow and unpredictability also a kind of reflection on the moment.

Brendon Moeller's funky reinterpretation focuses on the buoyant melodies, allowing each development of the tune to shine on its own, all held together by his trademark deep house swing.

Davor's menacing rework, by contrast, dwells in the subliminal textures and off-kilter rhythms of the original, tweaking them for the deepest late-night bass excursion.

Finally, Brasswork Agency reimagines the tune as a sleek, futuristic machine, gliding effortlessly along where it previously had moved with a grinding shuffle.

For Fullbarr 8 emergent Cardiff artist Robert Cashin offers us a tentative glimpse into his prodigious talents. Providing two raw slabs of modern house music and source material for a pair of intriguingly contrasting remixes, this EP is an authoritative take on both studio and dance floor dynamics.

Lead track Stay is a smooth aquatic number driven by a commanding sub bass line. With chunky drum programming stripped to its rawest elements, the 22-year-old Welshman allows the groove to naturally unfurl while subtly changing texture through rasping snares and tumbling congas. This skeletal percussive intensity has an intoxicating and gently commanding effect, making for a formidable dance floor weapon.

The Midnite Radio version retains the restraint of the original, extending it to over ten minutes of tense, tripped out action. Unhurried and expansive, the remix explores the possibilities of Stay, creating a flowing dynamic as the intensity rises and falls.

Death on the Balcony lighten things up, splicing up the main riff and allowing it to wind around organic drums. Retaining the hypnotic aura, they open up the track with breezy vocals and a cheeky live bass riff. Fullbarr Digital’s inaugural release of 2010 comes in the shape of an alliance between Back To The Future’s Dudley Strangeways and sOMbOM’s Retrac. Having gathered momentum in 2009 through harnessing the talents of Danton Eeprom and Mark Broom, the label return for with four devilishly enticing dance floor tracks from the explosive Anglo-Welsh pairing.

Retrac & Dudley Strangeways pour the depths of their hedonistic urges into Dum Drumb, a chaotic, street brawl of a track. Tumbling kicks are met with slapping snares and mashed up vocals that will lock the floor into a rhythmic frenzy. Wood blocks, congas and exploded toms crash together, only abating for the skanking breakdown that heightens the percussive onslaught. The A1 is stone wall dance floor madness, yet only scratches the surface of the ideas collected into this package.

The Midnite Radio Remix of Dum Drumb has a majestic chug that conjures an almost Middle Eastern aura. Melding sirens, highly-reverbed, gently-plucked-strings with bulbous percussion, the track has a reptilian like wind and strut to it. Highly textured yet spacious and kinetic this track has enough tricks up its’ sleeve to set a charged atmosphere yet keep the energy on the floor.

A deep and bouncy number, Hold Back’s serious chords are played off against jumpy drum programming for an energetic work out. Dudley Strangeways & The Fizz top off the package The Stripper, an extended, tripped out voyage into the dark confines of unrequited love. The scene is set by perfectly deployed vocals creeping within the drums to creating a seductive rhythmic pattern.
